Here’s some out-of-this-world news: “Roswell” is being rebooted
Reboot fever has officially spread beyond our planet. Yep, the alien beings of Roswell will be landing on the CW again. A revamped version of the late-’90s/early-’00s teen drama is officially in development at the network, according to Variety.
No word yet on when the show will return, but we do know the updated series will be keeping things current by taking on a very different, very timely issue: The protagonist is the daughter of undocumented immigrants. The new one-hour drama will follow her journey as she returns home to Roswell, New Mexico. There, she discovers her high school crush is an alien with special powers and joins forces with him to dig into how he ended up on Earth and who else is out there (maybe they could call fellow rebootees Mulder and Scully for help?).
The reboot will apparently also be exploring the “politics of fear and hatred,” which seems fitting considering the clashing perspectives on immigration we read about daily.
The original sci-fi drama, which helped launch the careers of stars like Katherine Heigl and Colin Hanks, departed our galaxy back in 2002 after three seasons.We don’t know if Heigl, Hanks, or any of the original cast members will be returning for the new Roswell, though we’re guessing they won’t have much trouble finding a committed fan base.
The show’s final season aired long before fans regularly banded together to revive beloved series (you really owe the Internet a big thank you, Veronica Mars-watchers), but it didn’t stop Roswell devotees from trying. Producers reportedly received more than 3,000 bottles of Tabasco sauce (a nod to one character’s fave condiment) from fans in 2002, hoping to prove their passion and save the show. It didn’t work at the time. Wonder how many bottles it took to make this revival happen?
