Here’s who David Tennant (aka The Doctor) wants to play, well, The Doctor on “Doctor Who”

While we’re about to enter into MONTHS of speculation, David Tennant has revealed who he thinks should play the new Doctor, and we have to say that we’re into it.

It was revealed earlier this week that Peter Capaldi would be relinquishing the role of The Doctor when the upcoming season of Doctor Who comes to a close this Christmas. As is the great tradition of the long-running British sci-fi series, this means that Capaldi’s Doctor (the twelfth) will regenerate into a brand new Timelord.

Of course, rumors have already begun to circulate as to who could be lined up to play the iconic role, with many calling for the thirteenth incarnation of the Doctor to be a woman (YES. SO MUCH YES).

And now David Tennant has opened up about who he feels should take over the role.

Of course, Tennant was the tenth Doctor and played character for three season (and five special episodes) before being replaced by Matt Smith, so it’s fair to say he knows a little bit about this timey wimey wibbly wobbly stuff.

Speaking to The World at One show on BBC Radio 4, Tennant suggested that his Broadchurch co-star, Olivia Coleman, should take on the role.

“Olivia would clearly be a magnificent choice. If you have the right people telling the right stories then it’s absolutely a possibility," he said.

This choice might not be completely outlandish. Doctor Who‘s current show runner, Steven Moffatt, is being replaced by Chris Chibnall, who is creator of Broadchurch, the crime drama that gripped the UK (and gathered a few U.S. fans in the process when it aired on BBC America).

Coleman also completely stole the show during on AMC’s adaptation of The Night Manager, based on the novel by John le Carré of the same name. Indeed, that mini-series won Tom Hiddleston a Golden Globe, and picked up almost unanimous praise.

Meanwhile, Tennant also spoke about why he believed that Doctor Who had such an enduring fanbase and such longevity.

“People who know the show and love the show get very attached to actors in the role but are also excited about change and renewal,” he said. “That’s how the show has managed to keep going over the years.”

Of course, we’re going to have to wait a while before we find out who the next Doctor is. What’s more, we still have one more season with Peter Capaldi, too! Indeed, Doctor Who returns to BBC American on April 15th.
