Dakota Johnson’s chic ponytail at the “Fifty Shades Freed” premiere will be the spring hair trend of 2018

Celebrities tend to step out with that perfectly undone “I woke up like this look.” The secret? They’ve usually spent some time in a hairstylist’s chair beforehand. It might come as a surprise, but it really does take work to look effortless. Case in point: Dakota Johnson, who wore a ponytail, to the Fifty Shades Freed premiere. But, needless to say, this was not your ordinary “I’m too lazy to wash my hair today” ponytail. Far from it.

Celeb hairstylist, Mark Townsend, worked his hair magic, and we’re totally coveting the chic, narrow ‘tail Johnson rocked for the movie’s premiere. It looked both glamorous and simple, and the little details Townsend incorporated into the low ponytail really took it next level. And while Johnson’s hair looked effortless, Townsend shared that it can be one of the hardest hairstyles to do. He wrote in an Instagram post,

"People assume ponytails are a quick and easy hairstyle but truth be told they can be very tricky and can be one of the hardest hairstyles to pull off on a red carpet because they do have to be perfect to be red carpet worthy."

Luckily for us, he explained how he achieved that chic ‘do.

"And while it may look effortless there are actually 3 Scünci Hair hair elastics, 6 bobby pins, more than a few drops of Honest Beauty's #shineserum and half a can of Dove Micro Mist Extra Hold Hairspray keeping that pony in place and trust me, it took a lot of effort to look that effortless."

But the good news is, Townsend shared one important tip for anyone who wants to create a similar look at home. First things first, if you want a narrow pony like Johnson’s (as opposed to one that fans out), you’ll want to set it in a tight chignon before you even start your hair. You can let this sit while you do your makeup or choose your outfit.

He explained that you’ll want to gather your hair at the nap of the neck and tie your ponytail with a taut elastic. Leave a few strands in the front to soften the look. After, take a small section of hair from your pony, wind it around the base of the style, and pin it in place.

And that’s it!
