The “Hereditary” trailer is here, and if it doesn’t scare the bejeezus out of you, nothing will

Prepare to feel afraid, very afraid: The first trailer for Hereditary is here, and it’s terrifying in all the best ways. The horror film stars Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, and Milly Shapiro (from Matilda on Broadway!) as a family that’s haunted — literally — following their grandmother’s passing.

The Hereditary trailer makes you question everything you see, and the scary AF music only fuels that. Even the first glimpse of the film is shrouded in mystery: The camera pans around an attic, and then zooms in on a doll house where the trailer begins. Nothing is as it seems!

Collette seems haunted by the loss of her mother, and as the trailer continues, it’s evident that something is “off” with her. It’s her children, though — former Nickelodeon star Wolff and Broadway gem Shapiro — who seem to get the worst of it.

Hereditary puts the“creepy kids” idea front and center, and you really don’t know what you’re supposed to believe.

Shapiro, who plays the younger daughter, is apparently the family oddball. She scribbles gargoyle-esque pictures of her family, and is drawn to spooky things like death and dead birds (still recovering from that very disturbing shot, by the way). Wolff, meanwhile, seems to be battling the demons within.

Throw in tense sound effects, some jump scares, and that freaky figurine hobby of Collette’s, and you’ve got a legit horror movie on your hands. Oh, and the whole trailer is framed by Collette’s eulogy for her mother, because of course it is.

Seriously, this movie isn’t messing around when it comes to scaring the bejeezus out of all of us.
