Here’s how to volunteer at 6 organizations that could really use the help after today
Inauguration Day is upon us and, as we already know, the next four years are going to be very different for all of us. Whether or not that’s a good or bad reason depends entirely on where you stood during the election.
Considering the political climate now, many have expressed interest in donating and volunteering their time to organizations that fight to protect women’s rights, LGBT rights, minority rights, and more.
Below is a list of some of those organizations:
1. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)
The ACLU’s goal is to ensure that the rights and liberties written in the Constitution are protected for the American people.
How to take action:
- Apply for an internship. They offer legal internships and fellowships in Washington, D.C., California, and New York.
- Make a donation. You can choose to donate once or on a recurring basis.

Planned Parenthood’s goal is to provide affordable healthcare for men, women, and young adults, with an emphasis on family planning, reproductive health, and sex education.
How to take action:
- Volunteer at a local Planned Parenthood. Volunteer opportunities include administrative and clerical duties, assisting with public relations campaigns, and helping to plan and execute events for community outreach.
- Make a donation. You can choose to donate once or on a recurring basis.
3. The National Disability Rights Network (NDRN)
The NDRN protects the rights of individuals with disabilities, fighting against abuse and ensuring fair treatment in everything from healthcare to housing.
How to take action:
- Apply for an internship. The NDRN offers law internships in Washington, D.C. for college students, where interns work with a team of attorneys on various disability issues.
- Make a donation.
4. The LGBT National Help Center
The LGBT NHC provides peer-support and educational resources for the LGBT community.
How to take action:
- Volunteer for the LGBT NHC. Volunteers help with phone support, administrative tasks, public relations, research, and more. You can be based in San Francisco or volunteer remotely.
- Make a donation. You can choose to donate once or on a recurring basis.
5. National Immigration Project
The National Immigration Project is a network of lawyers, law students, and other allies who work to protect and defend immigrants in the U.S.
How to take action:
- Apply for an internship. Interns can assist in legal research and projects, community outreach and social media campaigns, or working with the Board of Directors to strengthen the Project’s financial base.
- Make a donation.
6. National Action Network (NAN)
The NAN fights to protect civil rights and pursue equal opportunities for all, regardless of race, religion, nationality, or gender.
How to take action:
- Volunteer for the NAN. Volunteer opportunities include researching local and national civil rights issues and assisting with crisis hotlines.
- Make a donation.
