Disney’s “Moana” won’t have a love interest and that’s cool with us
Disney’s next feature-animated film is once again giving us a Princess, and we’re already completely in love with her. From the few quick snippets we’ve seen of Moana (and her film of the same name) she is strong, fierce, and completely awesome. We also just learned one mega amazing thing about her:
Her movie won’t be a love story, it’ll be all about Moana finding herself.
Earlier today, Comic-Con hosted a Moana panel with directors John Musker and Ron Clements, along with newly minted real-life Disney Princess, the voice of Moana, Auli’i Cravalho (who also surprised the entire panel by showing up, and also she is adorable IRL). For those wondering if Moana is going to find her happily ever after with someone in the movie, think again. It’s not happening.

During the panel, Musker and Clements made it clear that this is not going to be a love story — kinda like how Brave and Frozen were not love stories (unless you count the undying love between sisters).
“She’s empowering, she’s empowered,” Cravalho told the crowd. “As a teen I can relate with trying to find yourself. I really love her…After watching [this movie], I knew I was a part of something really special”
“Moana is going on a hero’s journey. She’s very much a hero,” Clements explained, with Musker adding, “I think she’s going to be a fantastic role model for young girls. I think it’s a great message for young women.”

Already loving absolutely everything about this movie, and we’re still four months away from seeing it. We need thousands more strong, independent, and fearless role models out there for young women — and hey, adult women, too.
