Netflix has released the first picture of Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, and it is a MOOD
It is a big week for the royal family — and not *just* because of Queen Elizabeth’s reported subtle dig at Donald Trump. Netflix has started releasing the first photos of the newly recast royal family in The Crown, and they are nothing short of spectacular — and regal, of course.
On the heels of the first look of Olivia Colman as the titular Queen Elizabeth, the first photo of Helena Bonham Carter as her wildcard little sister has arrived — and she is serving up a big mood if we’ve ever seen one. Looking everything like the natural successor to Vanessa Kirby’s Princess Margaret, Bonham Carter is taking no prisoners in the photo, staring down at her lit cigarette, giving us a glimpse at the sleek cat-eye as perfected during Kirby’s tenure as Margaret.
In addition to releasing the first photo of Margaret, Netflix also gave us our first shot of Ben Daniels as her husband, Antony Armstrong-Jones, aka Lord Snowdon, who is taking over the role from Matthew Goode. The photos, posted to The Crown‘s official Twitter page alongside the ominous captions “Hope” and “Hurt.” seem to make a subtle reference the troubles ahead for the couple.

Now, we’re only missing our first photo of Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, who is taking over the role from Matt Smith.
In February, showrunner Peter Morgan confirmed that the season would take place in the years between 1964 and 1976, roughly the period in which Harold Wilson was Prime Minister. He will be played by Jason Watkins in Season 3. Erin Doherty has also joined the cast as Princess Anne.
While the decision to replace Claire Foy and company with older actors after two seasons has been met with decidedly mixed responses, it seems the royal characters are being left in the best hands. The series, which is tentatively set to run for six seasons, is reportedly filming Seasons 3 and 4 back-to-back with its new cast. The series will then recast its royal family once more with older actors.
Netflix has yet to announce an air date for Season 3 of The Crown, but the BBC is reporting the series will air in 2019.
