The “Heathers” trailer is here, and it’s full of blood, murder, and killer outfits

The ’80s cult classic film Heathers is a favorite among so many of us. It’s irreverent, it’s honest, it’s bloody, it’s hilarious, and it’s just so much fun to watch. Because so many of us love the original version, the stakes are pretty high for the series adaptation.

However, we got really hopeful when the show released its teaser trailer during the MTV VMAs, and have been anxiously awaiting to see more. Finally, we have a bit more to pour over — the new, full-length, red band trailer has been released. It’s definitely NSFW, but it’s got us amped for an even darker, just as hilarious take on Heathers.

From the looks of the trailer, the new Heathers series doesn’t simply try to recreate the original movie.

Instead, we follow Veronica Sawyer as she deals with a whole new clique, which has been updated to reflect the diversity that we find in high schools today. We’re pretty excited about the representation found in this Heather clique that features a curvy and fashionable woman, a genderqueer person, and a woman of color.

The trailer also makes the series look like it managed to recapture the whip-smart, cutting humor that we all fell in love with when watching the 1989 version. Even better, one of the original Heathers, Shannen Doherty, makes an appearance. Blending new-school and old-school, this might be our new favorite show.

Updating well-loved classics is always a risky move.

However, formatting the Heathers update as an anthology series and updating it to reflect modern high schools could be just the thing to make this reboot work. If anything, the trailer makes it look like a super fun adventure and low-key trip down nostalgia lane.

Of course, we’ll have to check out the show to see for ourselves. Heathers premieres Wednesday, March 7th at 10 PM on Paramount Network. And yes, we’re counting down the days…
