Watch Malala be a total big sister in this sweet clip from ‘He Named Me Malala’
Malala Yousafzai is an activist for girls’ education, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, an assassination-attempt survivor, a student, a public speaker, an author, a humanitarian. She’s also an 18-year-old girl.
What the new documentary about Malala’s life, He Named Me Malala, does so well is unite the Malala public figure we’ve come to know, with the private person that is also Malala Yousafzai. The daughter, the friend, the sister.
In a new clip we see this sister side of Malala as she introduces her younger brothers to the camera. “This is my youngest brother, he is a really good boy,” she says, as the camera settles on her brother Atal. When the camera pans to her brother Khushal, Malala describes him as, “an OK boy.” Malala and Khushal also arm wrestle (we won’t tell you who wins).
It’s kind of hard not to smile thinking about the sibling dynamic between Malala and her brothers — it’s really a mind-scramble seeing this generally poised public figure suddenly become, well, a big sister. Incredibly inspirational, humanitarians fighting for equal rights? Apparently, at the kitchen table, they’re just like us.
