HBO might already have the next big “Westworld” — and it involves J.J. Abrams and space

Sci-fi nerds, get ready: J.J. Abrams and HBO are prepping a space drama. That’s right, the team that brought us the crazy first season of Westworld is at it again. Only this time, the show is in outer space, not a Western/sci-fi nightmare theme park.

Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and HBO are developing Glare. The series investigates the colonization of another planet. Needless to say, we are very, very intrigued. It’s a 1-hour drama, but apart from that, we don’t know any details.

Obviously, J.J. Abrams has a long history with sci-fi. From Lost to *both*Star Trek and Star Wars, the producer/director knows what he’s doing. He tends to create exciting narratives with an edge of mystery to them (We’re looking at you, Cloverfield). So we could see Glare going in a number of different directions in regard to tone and plot. Regardless, we’re pretty sure it will have the makings of excellent TV.

The script will be penned by Javier Gullón. He wrote Jake Gyllenhaal’s 2013 film Enemy. He’ll also executive produce the project with Abrams. Most of Gullón’s work is in Spanish, so we’re curious to learn more about his aesthetic.

This announcement comes during an already busy month for Abrams. For one, season one of Westworld just ended (Don’t fret: season 2 is coming in 2018). For another, he’s a producer on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. That film hits theaters THIS WEEK (omg omg), and we’re practically counting the seconds.

Hopefully, more details about Glare will surface soon. For now, though, we’re just going to thank the TV gods for this gift.
