HBO officially announced when “Game of Thrones” is ending. *sobs*
All good things must come to an end, and that includes HBO hit Game of Thrones. While it was a bit unclear for awhile as to when the epic show was going to call it quits, the network just confirmed that yes, Season 8 would be its last.
News broke earlier that Season 7 would only consist of seven episodes, unlike prior seasons (which held 10 episodes per). Now, it’s been rumored that the final season would actually just have six — but that’s subject to change.
“Yes, they have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do,” programming president Casey Bloys said to Entertainment Weekly about the news. “Believe me, as the new [programming executive] coming in, if I could get them to do more. I would take 10 more seasons. But we take their lead on what they think they can do the best version of the show.”
News of the new seasons is especially exciting, since both fans of the book series and fans of the show have no clue how it’ll end. George R.R. Martin is still in the midst of writing the much-anticipated sixth book of the series, The Winds of Winter, which might just go in a completely different direction from what we see on television. (But since Martin is involved with the show, the two will likely have some similarities.)
While hearing about the end of such a phenomenal show is kind of a bummer, it’s good to know that the show will wrap up when the story is officially complete, and not just throw a bunch of filler in there for extended seasons. Plus, we’ll surely see the talented cast elsewhere.
And, who knows? Maybe there’ll be a spin-off in the future. Entertainment Weekly made sure to ask Bloys if this would be a possibility.
“We’ve talked about it,” Bloys said. “It’s something I’m not opposed to, but of course it has to make sense creatively… It’s a pretty intense production, they’re about to start production soon. I’m open to it. The guys weren’t opposed to it, but there’s no concrete plans for it at this point.”
