HBO just made Emmy history as the first network in 13 years to do this

If if felt like two shows won BIG at the Emmys last night, it’s because they did. One of our favorite funny shows, Veep, and our favorite show with dragons, Game of Thrones, both took home a handful of Emmys during the 67th annual telecast. While it might not seem like Veep and Game of Thrones have anything in common, they actually share one important thread: they’re both HBO shows. And thanks to that network connection, the cable network just shattered a huge record that hasn’t been done since 2002.

Just what did HBO do, thanks to the help of Selina Meyer and Jon Snow? HBO took home the top honors in both Comedy and Drama for Outstanding Series. The last time a network pulled that off was in 2002, when NBC’s  Friends won Outstanding Comedy, and The West Wing won Outstanding Drama. Since then, neither winner has aired on the same network. This is kind of a big deal to pull off.

Not only did HBO break this 13-year streak, the network was by far the biggest winner of the night. Veep took home top honors for Outstanding Comedy, along with leading lady Julia Louis-Dreyfus and right-hand man Tony Hale winning acting awards. The show also won Outstanding Comedy Writing for last season’s episode, “Election Night.”

Over in Westeros, Peter Dinklage won best supporting actor for playing Tyrion. Then, the honors of Best Writing and Best Directing for the season finale, “Mother’s Mercy,” went to Game of Thrones as well. And that’s still on top of being named Best Drama Series.

Now take these Emmys, and add them to the bazillion Emmys HBO’s miniseries, Olive Kitteridge took home, and HBO is having a pretty good day.  If you still need to check out any of these shows — and you should, they’re all on Andy Samberg’s free HBO Now account, which still appears to be working. Just don’t lock yourself in a TV bunker for a year to watch them all.
