The HBO hackers have released a ransom note set to the “Game of Thrones” theme, and wow that’s extra

Just a week after stealing 1.5 terabytes of data from HBO, hackers have released a ransom note set to the Game of Thrones theme. Yes, seriously.

The HBO hackers are proving they’re just as dramatic as the company they stole from.

They allegedly sent a scrolling ransom note/video to HBO CEO Richard Plepler and demanded an undisclosed amount of money in exchange for the data. Not to mention, they allegedly told Plepler that unless he pays the ransom they’d continue to release data, including scripts, internal documents, and unreleased episodes of various HBO original programs.

In addition to sending Plepler a ransom note, the hackers released their second batch of data.

That includes a script from upcoming GoT episode “Eastwatch,” a host of internal documents, and a batch of emails from an unnamed HBO executive.

According to The Verge, one document contains email addresses, home addresses, and phone numbers of every actor working on GoT Season 7. The leak also includes media plans, technical documents, and episodes of Ballers, Room 104, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

In a statement to Wired, HBO spokesperson Jeff Cusson said, "[The company's] forensic review is ongoing. The review to date has not given us a reason to believe that our email system as a whole has been compromised."

Cusson’s statement is very similar to the one Plepler gave a few days after the breach.

In it, he makes it clear that HBO doesn’t believe the hack will echo the 2014 Sony hack, in which the entertainment company’s email database was breached and a slew of damaging emails were released.

Despite the attempted extortion and leaking of a *lot* of internal data, the HBO hackers maintained in their ransom note to Plepler that they weren’t looking to do any damage to HBO, but simply wanted money from the premium cable network.
