HBO was just hacked, and yes, some “Game of Thrones” episodes are in danger

Oh no: Looks like Cersei Lannister has been meddling again. Okay, so we can’t actually blame Cersei for this one, but we do have some troubling news regarding Game of Thrones and HBO more broadly. We just found out that HBO has been hacked and data has been released. And that data reportedly includes forthcoming episodes of Ballers and Room 104 — and details from an upcoming episode of Game of Thrones.

Hacks have become more prevalent in recent years (most notably the Sony hack in 2014). And for HBO, just trying to keep any Game of Thrones info under wraps has been a struggle. Remember when entire episodes were leaked online before Season 5 even aired?

And now HBO has this other big issue on its hands.

So far, in addition to those upcoming episodes of Ballers and Room 104, the leak includes written content said to be from Season 7, Episode 4 of Game of Thrones (which airs this Sunday). There have been threats that more information will be released, and reports claim that about 1.5 terabytes of data has been stolen.

Here’s what HBO said about the hack in a statement:

“HBO recently experienced a cyber incident, which resulted in the compromise of proprietary information... We immediately began investigating the incident and are working with law enforcement and outside cybersecurity firms. Data protection is a top priority at HBO, and we take seriously our responsibility to protect the data we hold.

Here’s hoping this all gets figured out, and that nothing else leaks.
