Serial fanatics, rejoice: HBO is making a docuseries about Adnan Syed
The ending of Serial Season 1 in 2014 left listeners in suspense, wondering what would happen to Adnan Syed, who was convicted of the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee — and may be innocent. But for those of us anxiously awaiting updates in the case, there is good news. HBO has announced that it’s producing a new docuseries about Syed’s case, and it promises to bring fresh evidence to the table.
Today, May 16th, HBO announced the four-hour series, titled The Case Against Adnan Syed. HBO partnered with Sky for the project, which will be directed by Amy Berg, who received an Oscar nomination for her 2006 documentary Deliver Us from Evil. The series will also feature music by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.
According to a press release provided to Rolling Stone, the series will explore Lee’s life and murder “from high school romance, forbidden love and cultural conflict, to the aftermath of her disappearance, the original police investigation and the present day.”
HBO told E! News that the series will include new evidence, including “groundbreaking revelations that challenge the state’s case” against Syed. The project has reportedly been in production since 2015.

Syed was granted a new trial in March, after Maryland’s second-highest court determined that his original defense team’s “deficient performance” made the trial unfair. But prosecutors are challenging this decision, asking the Maryland Court of Appeals on May 14th to reverse the ruling.
A release date for The Case Against Adnan Syed has not been announced. And since Syed’s new trial is being challenged, we might have to wait a while for new updates about this case. But in the meantime, we’ll be anxiously scanning headlines and awaiting HBO’s docuseries.
