Hayley Atwell just got cast as the lead in a new pilot — so what’s happening to “Agent Carter”?

Time to get excited, because wonderful and kickass Hayley Atwell is going to have a brand new show on TV!

“But doesn’t she already have a wonderful and kickass show on TV?” You ask, very nervous about the future of ABC’s Marvel’s Agent Carter. And yes, yes she does already have one show on TV right now. But soon, she could actually have two on the network.

Atwell has been cast as the lead in ABC’s new show, Conviction, in which she’ll play Carter Morrison. According to The Wrap, Carter is a “brilliant but ne’er-do-well daughter of a former president, who is blackmailed into taking a job as the head of Los Angeles’ newly created Conviction Integrity Unit. She and her team of lawyers, investigators and forensic experts work together to examine cases where there’s credible suspicion that the wrong person may have been convicted of a crime.”

Do you get a fictional Making A Murderer vibe from that description? It sure sounds like that’s what route the show is going to take, and here’s another reason to start getting excited: The series was co-created by one of the heads of Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Liz Friedman, who also wrote the pilot’s script.

But real talk, what does this mean for Agent Carter? The show has not been picked up for a third season yet, but the news of Atwell’s next venture doesn’t mean it can’t, or won’t, return. With both shows on ABC, it’d be easy to work around shooting schedules and Agent Carter has, for at least these past two seasons, only received a 13-episode mid-season order.

So there’s no need to worry, she could still be back to save the world with the SSR. And then save some convicted felons. Both under the name of Carter. Meta, much?
