This super-complex fan theory suggests that Voldemort has a secret relative in “Harry Potter”

We all love our nerdy fandoms. And we all have ideas about the untold elements of these stories. Fan theories aren’t new. But they do run the gamut. Some are simple and casual. Others are of the “OMG-how-did-you-come-up-with-that” variety. This new theory about Dumbledore’s connection to Salazar Slytherin in Harry Potter is certainly the latter.

There are scores of Harry Potter theories. First of all, there’s the “Snape is alive” theory. There’s the “Ginny slipped Harry a love potion” theory. There’s the “This is actually how Harry came back to life” theoryAnd that’s just naming a select few. This new one, though, miiiiight just blow your mind.

The theory? Albus Dumbledore is actually a descendant of Salazar Slytherin.

But actually, what?!

Well, according to Reddit user (and evil genius?) Obversa, it’s actually straightforward. Well, kind of. It all starts with Isolt Sayre, the founder of the North American magic school Ilvermorny. Isolt, who was a descendant of Slytherin, had two daughters. These are Rionach, a witch, and Martha, a Squib. Rionach never married. But Martha married a Native American man. In theory, because they were descendants of Slytherin, they both carried the gene that would let them understand Parseltongue.

ICYMI, or if it’s been a long time since you’ve reread the Harry Potter series, Dumbledore seems to be able to understand Parseltongue. At least, when he and Harry go into Bob Ogden’s and Morfin’s memories in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, he doesn’t seem to need Harry to translate Parseltongue. There are multiple moments in the series where J.K. Rowling implies that you can’t learn Parseltongue. You must be born able to understand it. Even if Dumbledore isn’t a Parselmouth, his ability to understand the language is, well, kinda suspicious.

This is where Obversa reallyyyy connects some dots.

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, some information comes to light about Dumbledore’s mother, Kendra.

"Despite the high-necked silk gown she wore, Harry thought of Native Americans as he studied her dark eyes, high cheekbones and straight nose."

Remember Isolt’s Squib daughter, Martha, who married a Native American man? Obversa suggests that Kendra is her descendant. Therefore, she is also a descendant of Salazar Slytherin himself. So, Dumbledore could understand Parseltongue because he’s blood-related to Slytherin. We already know that Voldemort is a descendant of Slytherin.

So this theory would mean that Dumbledore and Voldemort are related.

Obversa gets really in-depth with the theory, which you can check out here. And, we kinda hate to say it (because it’s just SO MUCH to take in), but they might just be right. And, honestly, our minds are officially blown.
