Here’s how much the Harry Potter series is actually worth

Can you believe that Harry Potter first entered the public consciousness in 1997? That’s almost 20 years since J.K. Rowling’s first installment, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, hit bookshelves, and people around the globe fell in love with The Boy Who Lived. And boy – did they fall hard! We are talking books, films, rides and attractions, a two-part stage play, and a spin-off to boot. So, just how much is Harry Potter and all of his wizardry goodness worth in revenue?

According to a new Coinage video, the answer is 51,877,687.62 Galleons, 11 Sickles and 12 Knuts.

For all you, Muggles, out there, that’s approximately 25 billion dollars. Yes — you heard right.  Billions!

It’s unclear whether or not the video incorporates J.K. Rowling’s spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but we know in our heart of hearts that the first film and it’s upcoming sequels are going to break all sorts of records. Come on. Who doesn’t love seeing Eddie Redmayne don a bow tie and a fantastically scruffy mane?

It’s safe to assume it’s going to put more cha-ching in J.K. Rowling’s pockets, and she totally deserves it!

In her 2008 commencement speech to Harvard University graduates, J.K. Rowling has famously said of her time before Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone that:

“…by every usual standard, [she] felt like the biggest failure [she] knew....An exceptionally short-lived marriage had imploded, and I was jobless, a lone parent, and as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless..." 

Pretty tough stuff.  Through courage, willpower and other superhuman abilities, this scribe completed and pushed this beloved series out into the universe. And well, we think that’s pretty magical. We salute you, J.K. Rowling. Your special brand of wizardry inspires the heck out of us. Please don’t ever stop.
