Someone finally figured out how much Harry Potter had in Gringotts, and it’s A LOT

Though he lived in a cupboard under the stairs for his first 11 years of life, Harry Potter actually had a lot of dough Galleons. He just didn’t know it. It wasn’t until Hagrid took him to Gringotts for the first time that he gazed upon the small fortune his parents left him.

Oh wait, small is not the correct word. Huge or gigantic might be better, seeing as how the numbers have been run to back that up.

Using some basic math properties, Reddit user NeokratosRed roughly estimated how much Harry has in his vault at the beginning of Sorcerers’s Stone. They also low-balled their number, not wanting to overestimate just how big the vault was, and how many piles of coins there actually were. Their final number? Around $1.2 MILLION.

First, NeokratosRed studied some screenshots from the Vault scene in the movie, and tried to measure the width, depth, and height of the pile of gold. Since it’s in the shape of a pyramid, the next step was to find the volume of that, and MATH!

Then via some MORE MATH, and looking at more stills from the movie, NeokratosRed believes that there are about 50,625 galleons in Harry’s vault. Take that number, and convert it from Galleons to pounds and then to dollars, and you’ve got over one million dollars for Harry to spend at Zonko’s.

Keep in mind, this is just what Harry has in his vault, and this is just one pile of what’s probably in his vault. This number doesn’t take into account his property — Grimmauld’s Place — OR any silver Sickles, that are mentioned in the book. So really, Harry’s got way more than just $1.2 million saved away for a rainy day.
