“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” just won so many awards, even Hermione would be jealous

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child isn’t coming to Broadway until next year, but after last night’s Olivier Awards, we now know exactly what to expect. The Harry Potter sequel arrived on London’s West End last year to rave reviews and last night, won a total of NINE awards at the Olivier’s, which are the British version of the Tony Awards.

The play took home three acting honors: For Jamie Parker, who plays Harry Potter was awarded Best Actor; Noma Dumezweni won for Best Supporting Actress for Hermione Granger; and Anthony Boyle was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his role as Scorpius Malfoy. Additionally, The Cursed Child was awarded Best New Play, and also won awards for lighting, sound, costumes, and set design.

Even Hermione would have to concede to what an impressive feat that is!

The Cursed Child broke records held by Matilda: The Musical and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which each won seven Olivier awards. The Cursed Child had been nominated for an impressive record-tying eleven awards.

Unfortunately, American Harry Potter fans have to wait another year before the show debuts at the Lyric Theater in the spring of 2018 but historically, West End shows that clean up at the Olivier Awards tend to become huge hits on Broadway.

The story of The Cursed Child takes place just after the epilogue at the end of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, as Harry and Ginny Weasley’s middle child, Albus, embarks on his first year at Hogwarts.
