Unless you’re a big comic book buff, you likely don’t know the full backstory behind Quinn in Batman: The Animated Series. Movie Pilot breaks it down, explaining that at the onset of the series, she wasn’t meant to be quite the dynamo she eventually became. In fact, she had humble origins as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, a psychiatrist working at an asylum for the criminally insane, which is where she crosses paths with the Joker.

In a surprising turn of events, the young doctor falls in love with the disturbed Joker, which quickly leads to a lifetime of chaos. What starts as a semi-healthy obsession with him turns into a twisted game of manipulation that leads her to become a co-conspirator in his crimes and live a life of depravity.

“Falling madly in love with the Clown Prince of Crime, Dr. Quinzel broke him out of Arkham and dedicated her life to fulfilling his every genocidal desire,” Movie Pilot writes. “She is most frequently seen as both a collaborator and lover to the Harlequin of Hate.”

Harley Quinn’s dedication to the Joker remained steadfast, but what many people don’t know is that she was only going to be a featured sidekick in the series. Over time, fans grew fond of her and she became a regularly featured character.

We can’t wait to see Robbie kick butt when the movie comes out next month.
