Happy Homemade Bread Day!

Origin

Baking season is in full swing, and even though the focus may be on pies, cookies, and holiday treats, we can’t forget about bread. There are so many different kinds of bread… from pumpkin bread to wheat bread, from focaccia to pita bread. Don’t even get me started on pretzel bread or sourdough. Any way you slice it, bread is a delicious staple to many people’s daily diet. Bread has been around for a really, really long time, since the Neolithic era! Bread making is an art, though modern marvels such as the automatic breadmaker has made it easier for any person to embrace their inner baker. The Homemade Bread Day Committee of Montague, MI created this holiday to encourage the resurgence of baking homemade bread.

I know a lot of people that try to remove bread from their diet for health reasons, from gluten allergies to trying to cut carbs. Do not fear! You can still enjoy bread, but you have to be more careful. There are a lot of ways to tweak recipes to be more healthy and still taste incredible. I often substitute apple sauce for oil, and I honestly can’t tell the difference. And there are many gluten free recipes out there (I love the internet), you just have to find something that works for you. Also, for bread lovers that are just trying to cut back, use portion control! Instead of eating half of that loaf of banana bread (oh, I’ve been there), just have a slice, and eat it slowly. Take time to savor it, and you will enjoy it more while eating less. Yes, I am speaking from experience here.

How to Celebrate

There are approximately ten trillion (I made that number up) bread recipes out there, ranging from master baker to easy-peasy amateur status. Pick out a recipe that you fancy and bake something tasty today! I absolutely love baking during this time of year because not only do you get that cozy warmth from the heat of your oven, but you also get an amazing aroma of freshly baked bread. This is a great thing to do before having guests over because nothing feels more comfortable and homey than a room filled with that heavenly homemade fragrance.
