Happy Card Playing Day!

December 28th is Card Playing Day!

Why Celebrate?

In my family, a large part of our Christmas vacation has always been spent playing games together. Oftentimes, Santa brings a new game to try, or an old favorite is gifted. Sometimes, we have found, that the best games are card games. Card games in the sense that all you need is the traditional 52 card deck. These games are classic, and often overlooked for fancier board games, or even video games these days. (Wow, I don’t sound old and crotchety…) Anyways, playing card games with those we love (and even those we don’t love) makes memories, and allows for conversation and friendly rivalry. Break out the old dusty decks and put down the smart phones, tablets, and laptops. How about some good old-fashioned fun? Card games. Let’s bring them back.

How to Celebrate

Cribbage, Canasta, Thirty-one, Poker, Rummy, Go Fish, Seven Up, Speed… there are so many card games to choose from. Based on the size of your group, choose a fun new game to learn, or play an old favorite. Some card games can be pretty complicated, however, so it is usually best to play a game that at least one person in your group has played before. Pour yourself a glass of eggnog, make up a plate of Christmas cookies and treats, and grab a deck or two! Today is a great day to play cards with friends and family because, well, ’tis the season. It’s three days after Christmas, and if you’re lucky, you’re probably still hanging out and celebrating. Or, if you’re alone, you could always play Solitaire…

Quote of the Day

“Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but sometimes, playing a poor hand well.”
– Jack London
