Happy Birthday to the Amazing Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes!!

I feel like Lisa and I would have been great friends. I know that sounds crazy, but I love her and I know it to be true in my heart. Despite the TLC drama surrounding it, FanMail remained in my cd player for months after I got it. It woke me up for school every single day and I imagined singing “No Scrubs” to ALL the boys in my 1st grade classroom. Cause yeah, I was a TLC fan at age 7.

I remember blasting “Space Cowboy” thanking the gods that Left Eye and my boys in *NSync teamed up to make a classic. She was an amazing gift to music and a total bada**. I probably could have picked a more politically correct role model as a kid, but I loved Lisa. She was the definition of a HBIC before that acronym became popular. She paved the way for female artists like Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. and Iggy Azalea. And for that I am eternally grateful.

She was bold and unapologetic. She started conversations about safe sex and wasn’t afraid to push people’s button. Her lyrics were beautiful poetry and her dance moves were like no other. Her private life was multi-layered and at the time of her death she was seeking spiritual enlightenment. She wore oh-so-many hats.

So today, on what should be her 42nd (like, what?!) birthday, let’s celebrate the amazing Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez. She was unpredictable and imaginative and she is greatly missed by many.

Happy Birthday, Left Eye!
