Happy Birthday, Sasha Obama! Here Are 13 Things We Learned At Age 13

We’ve watched her grow up so it’s hard to believe Sasha is already a teenager!

While we don’t know what it’s like to be the first daughter, (with the exception of what we learned from the movie, My Date with the President’s Daughter), we do know what its like to be 13.  So in celebration of Sasha’s big day, here are 13 things we learned when we became teenagers.

1. Our own sense of style

Sasha already seems to have this one down and we just love her style! Thirteen is usually around the age when shopping stops being a chore and starts becoming a sport. This is the age where you start to learn who you are. And what better way to express that than through fashion?!

2. How to talk to boys

It’s around 13 that boys stopped having cooties. Or maybe the cootie shot finally kicked in? Still unclear. It was around this time when I started to have crushes on guys in my class, instead of the guys from the pages of Tiger Beat Magazine.

3. Hebrew

I’m sadly not Jewish, but all of my friends are. Around this time I went to about 20ish Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. I’d like to think/hope that I picked up some Hebrew.

4. Girls can be mean

With your parents no longer organizing playdates, now you can choose your friends. And you’ll start finding out who your true friends are and who are your enemies. Don’t worry, it gets easier in college.

5. How to dance with a boy at an awkward arm’s length

Because of the cooties.

6. How to walk in heels

I’m still working on this one. Luckily when I was 13, platforms were all the rage. I do suggest starting off with a platform or wedge and then transitioning into a stiletto once you get the balance down.

7. How to put on make-up

Which is always fun! Lesson learned – the makeup you wear for your school play does not equal the makeup you wear in real life. Less is more.

8. A straightening iron can be life changing

For me, 13 smelled like burnt hair and Abercrombie & Fitch Fierce cologne. Hot tools are great. But use with caution.

9. All of the lyrics to Rent’s “La Vie Boheme.”

At least that’s what us cool theater kids were doing! In other words, you will learn all of the lyrics to a song that is way too mature for you. It won’t be until college that you really understand what all of those lyrics meant.

10. You are not a teenage witch

11. Glitter isn’t always a great idea

It gets everywhere, it’s hard to clean up, and it looks weird in photos. Especially those taken on a Kodak disposable camera.

12. Rainbow braces are not flattering

But a great way to show your support for Pride!

13. Middle School is the worst, but it gets better

It really does. So have fun, don’t take anything too seriously, and before you know it you’ll be 23 wishing you were a kid all over again.
