Happy Birthday, Doris Day!
Happy birthday, Doris Day! The entertainment goddess turned 91 yesterday, and we’re celebrating her over here at Hello Giggles today because we are head over heels for this legendary singer, actress, and animal rights activist.
Day, born in 1924, started out as a big band singer in the 40s, appearing in her first film (the amazingly-titled “Romance on the High Seas”) in 1948. Over the course of her storied career, she appeared in a whopping 39 films. She was America’s biggest box office star from 1960-1964 (and the only woman in the top 10 list during that time), and appeared in the top 10 lists of biggest movie stars for a decade (1951-52, and the again from 1959-1966). She received an Academy Award nomination for her 1959 film “Pillow Talk,”a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 for her service to her country.
Though she made her last film in 1968, Day continued to make music (her most recent album came out in 2011). Day has also spent the past four decades working for animal rights. She founded the Doris Day Animal League, a leading animal rights organization that partners with the Humane Society to keep our furry friends safe and well.
Here’s a look back at some of our favorite Doris Day moments. Doris, our queen, we love you so.
