Happy Birthday, Benedict Cumberbatch!
Happy birthday, Benedict Cumberbatch – or as my mom likes to call him, “That guy… I can never get his name right… it sounds like cucumber patch? But that’s not it?”
You’re probably familiar with him from Sherlock, the British TV crime drama that depicts a modern Sherlock Holmes. Maybe you are familiar with him because you’ve stumbled across the massive Sherlock fandom on Tumblr and his face appeared on your dashboard enough times for you to say, “Is that his real name or is that a gem the Internet came up with?”
Anyway, today is his birthday and now that we are familiar with him, here are a few other things he worked on that we should check out.
THE HOBBIT
He portrayed Smaug the dragon through voice and motion capture and also provided the motion capture for the Necromancer in The Hobbit trilogy (2012). I want to see Cumberbatch play a dragon in a motion capture suit, you guys!
GIRLFRIEND IN A COMA
He voiced Dante in this 2012 documentary titled Girlfriend in a Coma, about Italian and western decline.
DID GOD CREATE THE UNIVERSE?
In 2011, his great British voice was the narrator for this TV documentary series. (UMMM… British guys, science and a TV show all at once?! Yes please.)
VAN GOGH: PAINTED WITH WORDS
He played Van Gogh himself in this UK TV movie. You can see some of it here!
HAWKING
He played the incredible Stephen Hawking in this 2004 TV movie, and he met the real Professor Stephen Hawking before filming to prepare for the role. He then subsequently provided the voice of the physicist in Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking in 2010 and Stephen Hawking’s Grand Design in 2012, which both aired in Discovery Channel.
