Hannah John-Kamen is stoked to play Marvel’s first genderbent villain – but that’s all she can say about Ghost in Ant-Man and the Wasp

In a few short weeks we’re going to meet a brand new Marvel villain who has gone through a totally page-to-screen makeover. While in in the comics, the hella mysterious character of Ghost has genuinely been portrayed as male (and even still, knowing Ghost is male is just about all we know about Ghost on most days!), when the character hits the big screen in Ant-Man and the Wasp, Ghost will now be portrayed as female — and a pretty kickass female at that.

When Ghost is finally unmasked in the movie (and no, that’s not a spoiler, we can see her face in lots of promo images and also trailers!), we’ll see that behind the hood is Hannah John-Kamen, who’s appeared in Black Mirror, SyFy’s Killjoys, and also once upon a time was a member of the dosh khaleen on Game of Thrones. And now, she’s set to appear as the second ever female Marvel antagonist. It’s something she’s excited about, and even more excited the character’s been gender-bent.

“I think the kind of gender swapping from male to female is [amazing],”John-Kamen explained on the set of Ant-Man during a set visit to the Atlanta, Georgia studio last year. “You look at graphic novels. You can look at comic books that were written so long ago. And they’re like 50 years old or 40 years old. It’s nice to go, ‘This is the modern world.’ It’s again freeing to be able to take that character and go, ‘Yeah, that can be played by a male or female.’ And that’s definitely forward thinking. And that’s been amazing to be able to do.”

But, while John-Kamen is game to talk about stepping into the role, she can’t actually talk about the role itself. Remember how Ghost in the comics is a big mystery? Welp, everything leading up to Ghost in the movie is a big mystery, too. While fielding questions from reporters during our interview, we’re me with a lot of: “That’s all I’m gonna give ya,” and “No comment on that one. I can’t honestly,” and “That’s a tough [question] to try and get around.” One of these questions was literally asking her if she has an iPhone in the movie.

“I know it sucks [I can’t talk more]!” she says with a laugh. “I’d love to give you more of what we know of who she is. But then that’s just going to spoil it for the movie and the fans. And you kind of want to wait and see that stuff.”

However, director Peyton Reed is willing to share a tiny bit more. Okay, not a while lot more. Reed explains that the BIG mission of the movie is to find Hope van Dyne’s (Evangeline Lilly) MIA mother, Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer). But, along the way our heroes — Hope and Scott (Paul Rudd) are going to run into all sorts of “road blocks.” Ghost being one of them.

“[Everything in Hope and Scott’s way] are really stumbling blocks on the path [to find Janet],” Reed told us. “The character [of] Ghost in the movie…we’ve adapted the character from the comics in a way that we feel is really unique to our movie and very much tied into this universe. So she becomes a really, really crucial part of the story in a way that I can’t really reveal yet.”

Elaborating a the tiniest bit further, producer Stephen Broussard explains that while they can’t say much, everyone’s just super stoked to see Ghost on screen.

“We thought that was a cool opportunity to create a character that was all about mystery and kind of what are the origins,” Broussard explained. “What is the backstory, what is the goals and agendas of this person? Was a great vehicle for kind of the story we wanted to tell, because Ghost in the comics itself was a mystery…Suffice it to say that, she is on a path, she is on a mission, at odds with our heroes on this journey, but of a similar goal, of a similar aim, at the worst possible time for Scott Lang.”

So we’ve learned a lot about Ghost…and also nothing about Ghost. We’ll find out her deal for real when Ant-Man and the Wasp hits theaters on July 6th.
