The Handmaid’s Tale is releasing a line of wines so we can drink our Gilead worries away
Update: Less than 24-hours after the wine was announced, the entire line has been canceled. According to People, who announced the collection on Tuesday, Lot18 and MGM are no longer going forwarded with the collection. Unfortunately, no clear reason was given, but considering the massive backlash the wines sparked on social media, that’s probably why.
Most people watch shows to unwind and alleviate the stress of everyday life, but for fans of the The Handmaid’s Tale, you could argue that watching each episode puts you in extreme emotional turmoil. Many of the scenes are incredibly harrowing, and some are so conspicuously rooted in reality that it can feel as if we’re living in this world with the characters. It’s not an easy show to binge, that is, unless you have strong drink in hand.
Clearly, the Hulu hit show understands the predicament we’re all in (both watching the show and, ahem, living right now) and that’s why they are releasing a line of wines to help us burn through all the emotionally demanding episodes. PRAISE BE!
Ahead of the Season 2 season finale, Handmaid’s Tale is releasing three different wines named after the three fiercest ladies on the show: Offred, Ofglen, and Serena Joy. Elisabeth Moss and Alexis Bledel’s Offred and Ofglen obviously both inspired red wine (hint, just like their required outfits), while Yvonne Strahovski‘s Serena Joy is a white.
Here are the details on the bottles you’ll soon uncork:
Offred, the show’s main heroine, gets a 2017 Pays d’Oc Pinot Noir. The website labels it as “seductive, its dark berry fruit and cassis aromatics so beguiling it seems almost forbidden to taste.” Downing a glass (or two) of Offred would be a “powerful experience you will never forget,” much like watching an episode of The Handmaid’s Tale.
Meanwhile, Ofglen, one of the most badass handmaids to ever live, inspires a 2017 Rogue Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It is a “daring testament to the heights that Oregon Cabs can reach, featuring concentrated flavors of cherry, plum and coffee bean that give way to a warm, spicy finish.”
The only white in the collection, Serena Joy, is a 2016 Bordeaux Blanc. It has notes of citrus juice and flavors of white grapefruit and lemongrass, and is described as “sophisticated, traditional and austere.” It’s one of those wines that “you shouldn’t judge too quickly, lest you miss out on a sublime experience.”
The three The Handmaid’s Tale varietals are available starting today on the Lot18 website. You can get a pair of each bottle for $40, or you can opt to snag the trio for $60. Blessed be the fruit.
