You can definitely watch these 5 Netflix movies with your kids on Halloween

One of the best things by FAR about the Halloween season is having the perfect excuse to hunker down on your couch in the newly brisk weather with a blanket and some popcorn to watch scary movies. Unfortunately, while you might love jumping out of your skin and staying up all night with residual fear from what you just watched, your kids probably don’t feel the same.

You could just wait until they go to bed to get your scare on, but also, you don’t want to deprive them of the best part of the season! Gotta start ’em young, or they’ll grow up weak and sheltered and not sleeping for two weeks after watching a horror movie at a sleepover. (No? Just me?)

Still, you don’t want to scar them for life. So here’s a list of some kid-friendly Halloween flicks for your little ghouls and goblins to dip their toes into the horror film pond without scaring the daylights out of them.

1. The Addams Family

Although the original Addams Family TV series is a must-see, the 1991 movie is currently on Netflix and well worth your time. They’re creepy and they’re kooky and sometimes downright unsettling, but the Addams Family loves one another despite their Halloweeny antics. So not ONLY will your kids go batty for them since they’re the perfect fictional family to spend Halloween with, but there’s also some important lessons, positive morals, and lots of heart. Plus, it’ll be good for you, too, because Gomez and Morticia are TOTAL #relationshipgoals.

2. Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein and Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman

An adorable throwback for you and a cartoon your kids might not be acquainted with, Alvin and the Chipmunks are sure to hit the spot. The Frankenstein and Wolfman installments are currently available for streaming on Netflix, so while probably most suitable for younger kids, you know you’re safe in their little chipmunk paws, and in for a good time.

3. Corpse Bride

Tim Burton is a great Halloween go-to, although we could watch his atmospheric, animated adventures year-round. Corpse Bride is a beautiful movie with a BEAUTIFUL score (seriously, we can’t stop talking about these piano pieces) centered around a romance gone wrong. While it might be a little too spooky for very young children, it’s definitely family-friendly, and will keep your interest, which is a parental (or babysitter!) must in any movie.

4. Scooby Doo

Another throwback cartoon-to-the-big-screen classic like Alvin and the Chipmunks, Scooby Doo is in our humble opinion a highly underrated film. It’s the Mystery Inc. gang brought together and cast to perfection, with all of the Scooby Snacks and zany hijinks you expect from the what you’d watch on Cartoon Network on Sunday mornings. Since it’s been a while since Scooby Doo was really a thing, it might not be something your kid will be familiar with — and trust us, you’ll enjoy introducing them, too.

5. Girl vs. Monster

We get SERIOUS Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibes from this movie poster (stylish teen girl wielding weapons? SIGN US UP), so it can’t POSSIBLY be bad. It follows sassy, capable teen Skylar after she finds out her parents are monster hunters, and has to save them from the creatures she accidentally released. We’re HERE for young girls getting their own coming-of-age stories and fighting some literal (and metaphorical, we’re deep) demons, so even though we don’t have kids…. we’re probably going to watch this anyway.
