The first trailer for Hairspray Live! is here and you can’t stop the beat! Even though the live musical doesn’t debut until December, we’re already counting down the days.
Hairspray airs on December 7th, so have your popcorn ready!

Grab your dancing shoes, because Hairspray is bound to get everyone off the couch and onto the living room dancefloor with the musical’s catchy tunes. This is the first time we’re seeing the stars in character, including newcomer Maddie Baillio as Tracy Turnblad.
The star-studded cast includes Kristin Chenoweth, Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, Derek Hough, Martin Short, Dove Cameron, Garrett Clayton, Sean Hayes, Andrea Martin, and Rosie O’Donnell. Oh, and Harvey Fierstein is returning to his role as Edna, the part that won him a Tony in the Broadway show.
Live TV musicals seem to be the trend lately, and Hairspray follows NBC’s past live musical events The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, and The Wiz. Other channels are also jumping on board with the craze.
Earlier this month, Derek Hough told Entertainment Tonight that his sister Julianne Hough’s performance in Fox’s Grease: Live “raised the bar, as far as the way it was shot and the way it was done.”
After the success of Grease: Live, Fox is getting ready for The Rocky Horror Picture Show this fall, with Laverne Cox playing the iconic role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Victoria Justice, Ryan McCartan, Reeve Carney, Christina Milian, Adam Lambert, Staz Nair, and Annaleigh Ashford also star. The musical performances won’t be live.
ABC is also prepping for Dirty Dancing, though this is a non-live television music event. Abigail Breslin, Colt Prattes, Sarah Hyland, Bruce Greenwood, Nicole Scherzinger, Shane Harper, and Debra Messing are set to star in the remake of the classic film.
Hairspray Live! will air on Wednesday, December 7th on NBC.
