This hairdresser’s Facebook post about her client’s severe depression is going viral

Getting our hair done is a spiritual experience. We’re taking time to reshape how we look and how we feel about ourselves, all while cleansing and honoring our crown. For most of us, the connection we share with our hairdresser is a special one. Though they may not see us as often as our closest friends, there’s still a special trust that makes the bond unique.

There’s also a responsibility in being a hairdresser. Kayley Olson proves this with her viral Facebook post about helping a client with severe depression fix her hair, so she could feel more like herself again.

In the Facebook post, Kayley, a hairdresser from Waterloo, Iowa, describes her experience fixing the hair of a 16-year-old girl with severe depression.

She spent over 13 hours, spread over two days, fixing the girl’s hair to get her ready for picture day. The girl’s depression was so all-encompassing that she couldn’t even brush her hair, and was too embarrassed to try to fix it. Thankfully, Kayley got to work, and the results are striking.

The lesson is that mental health is real, and that it’s important for parents to recognize if their kids are struggling. It’s even more important that they do something about it.

"At the end of the day I want this to be a lesson to people," Kayley wrote. "MENTAL HEALTH is a thing, it affects people all around the world and of all ages! PARENTS take it serious don't just push your kids off and tell them to get over something they legitimately can't. A CHILD should NEVER feel so worthless to not even want to brush their hair. After being here 8 hours yesterday and 5 hours today we finally made this beautiful girl smile and feel like she IS worth something! Her last words to me was "I will actually smile for my schools pictures today, you made me feel like me again.

This is the kind of viral post we love seeing. With over 138,000 likes and 60,000 shares, this post serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health. The best part is that we know this girl is leaving with a smile on herself, and finally feeling more like herself again.
