We’ve unfortunately been there: Hailee Steinfeld discusses the awful way bullies treated her
We take one look at Hailee Steinfeld and just think, Wow, that girl slays! Well, she totally does. But it’s not like she always had an easy, breezy time in her life. In Hailee’s recent interview with Seventeen (she’s the cover girl, obviously), she gets real about what it was like to be bullied as a teen. When she was a kid, Hailee says she would get teased and pranked all the time, and it really took a toll on her.
“Every morning at 7:02, I’d get a prank phone call at my house. That’s how I’d start every day, with a threat saying, ‘Come to school now. We’re going to kick your butt.’”
Gosh, kids can be so mean sometimes. Because of this, Hailee was so freaked that she went to school super early and entered in the back way to avoid any confrontation. But the bullies had more awful tricks up their sleeves.
“There would be times when I’d come back to my desk and have hand sanitizer all over my books and in my water bottle.”
How anyone would want to be cruel to that face is beyond us!
“People would come by and slam my locker shut when I was still putting my books in it. It was just the most absurd things that you are supposed to see only in the movies.”
She’s grown a lot since then and can now understand how important it is to love yourself (you know, like her song “Love Myself”). “We are all so beautiful because we’re unique,” she says. Preach, sista! Plus, Hailee was also able to use all these experiences to prepare her for the role she plays in her upcoming movie The Edge of Seventeen, which you can see on September 30th.
“This girl goes through experiences I totally went through, where it felt like it was the absolute end of the world. Just having so many moments where you question who you are and what it is that you’re good at and what you feel good in.”
We hope Hailee never has to deal with bullying again. And, boy oh boy, we can’t wait to see her movie coming out next month! Go Haiz!
