Häagen-Dazs is giving away free ice cream cones today — here’s how to get yours

There are few things we love more than free food. And with summer just around the corner, we’ve been craving all kinds of ice cream — whether it’s gelato or non-dairy, it’s still delicious. Today, May 8th, ice cream lovers across the country are in luck because Häagen-Dazs stores are giving away free ice cream cones. Here’s how you can get your hands on one.

According to the Häagen-Dazs website, the rules are simple. Just visit your closest participating store between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. local time to claim your free, frozen treat. The ice cream seller is also encouraging customers to share their spoils with the hashtag #HDFreeConeDay for a chance to be featured on the company’s official Instagram page.

But the reason behind Häagen-Dazs Free Cone Day might be even sweeter than the ice cream itself. For the past decade, the company has championed efforts to protect the rapidly vanishing honey bee, forming the “Häagen-Dazs loves Honey Bees Initiative.” According to the initiative’s website, the ice cream company has donated $1 million to support honey bee research, and in 2016, it even established more than 6 miles of habitat for these tiny but mighty pollinators.

Given that one-third of all Häagen-Dazs flavors depend on bees, it’s easy to see what all the buzz is about. And to give back to these busy workers. the ice cream company is dedicating Free Cone Day to raising awareness about honey bees. In addition to their own initiative, Häagen-Dazs is urging customers to donate to the Xerces Society, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting insects like honey bees and butterflies.

Since bees are essential to the production of food (and also boast some adorable bee bums), this is a cause we can really get behind. And with free ice cream thrown in to sweeten the deal, you can bet we’ll be celebrating this Häagen-Dazs Free Cone Day.
