Gwyneth Paltrow regrets wearing this Oscars gown—so she’s auctioning it off for coronavirus relief
Gwyneth Paltrow has raided her own closet to help her fellow Americans in need. As part of the All-In Challenge, Paltrow is auctioning off her 2000 Oscars dress for charity. The highest bidder will not only receive the dress but will also get to meet Paltrow in person. Though the dress didn’t “spark joy” for Paltrow back when she wore it, it definitely sounds like it will for so many this time around.
“I am donating a dress I wore to the Oscars (and that holds great sentimental value!) which I will personally hand to you over a cup of tea or a glass of wine,” Paltrow captioned her April 18th Instagram post.
Paltrow continued, “Go to allinchallenge.com to bid as 100% of funds will go to help Americans currently experiencing food insecurity.” She then challenged Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lake Bell to participate.
And all proceeds from the auction will go toward charities, including Meals On Wheels, No Kid Hungry, Feeding America, and America’s Food Fund, among others. They are all working together to help ease the financial effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) on underprivileged families.
The dress itself is a hand-beaded Calvin Klein number in a “very end-of-the-90s” bias-cut style, Paltrow said. But because the ’90s are back in fashion, she thought this would be the perfect piece to donate. She wore the piece on the 2000 red carpet after winning the 1999 Oscar for Best Actress for Shakespeare in Love.
Although Paltrow says the dress holds sentimental value, she described it in a 2013 Goop blog post as “okay…but not Oscars material.”
According to HuffPost, the 2013 post read, “I chose it because I wanted to disappear that year.” But Paltrow auctioning off a dress she doesn’t necessarily love has had no effect on bidders. The starting bid has nearly tripled. The current bid sits at a comfortable $6,250.
