Gwyneth Paltrow handles criticism LIKE A BOSS
I have the softest spot for Gwyneth Paltrow. Two of my absolute favorite movies as an adolescent were Sliding Doors and Shakespeare in Love. Who am I kidding, these are STILL two of my favorite movies. To this day, I cheer every time I see her on screen (All the Iron Mans! The Avengers! Web Therapy! Glee!)
In the last few years, Gwynnie has had a tough time with the press and the public (see: every article about Goop ever). And I always feel so sad for her when I see her go through the ringer because yes, some things she says skew out of touch, but she really does seem like a well-meaning soul and you guys, have you even SEEN Shakespeare in Love (I have. 17 times if memory serves.)
So I was really proud of my Paltrow when she talked with a CNN Money reporter that grilled her about the Fall of the Gwyneth Wall.
When her interviewer Cristina Alesci summed up the philosophy of Goop as “I have it all and so can you,” Paltrow laughed good-naturedly and says “That’s not the philosophy!” When asked what the philosophy actually is, Paltrow says “We know that a woman’s time is her most precious resource, and we want to multi-task, get a lot done, and what we want to do is provide the best solutions.”
When Alesci followed up with the pretty hardball question “Do you think you are anything remotely close to the common woman, though?”, Paltrow gave the following (and in my opinion pretty freaking great) response:
“I’m incredibly close to the common woman in that I’m a woman, and I’m a mother, and we are all in a physical body, with beating hearts, with compassion, and love. We are all seekers, we all have questions, we all want fulfillment, we all want to live our best lives, we want to be healthy and happy and squeeze the most out of life, that’s all women.”
See, you guys? Gwyneth is okay! I mean, it is kind of hard to define Paltrow as the ‘common woman’ the way Alesci clearly meant it but, I think we’d be hard-pressed to find a celebrity that DOES fit that definition. So let’s cut Gwyneth a little more slack and give her a little more love.
