Gwendoline Christie teased that “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” goes “deeper” and “further” than previous movies

With just five months until it’s released, Gwendoline Christie has teased Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and we’re totally intrigued.

Of course, Christie had a small role in The Force Awakens as Captain Phasma. In the movie, we get to hear the actor’s voice, but we never got to see her face while she’s in character (until recently, during a photoshoot for Vanity Fair). In fact, the last we saw of her character, she was being chucked into a trash compactor by Rey and Finn, which is one way to dispose of your enemies.

Thankfully, it seems that we’ll be getting to see more of Captain Phasma and Gwendoline Christie in Star Wars Episode VIII.

The actor, who can currently be seen in HBO’s Game of Thrones, shared some gossip about the upcoming movie to Entertainment Weekly during the Television Critics Association’s press tour, stating that, in The Last Jedi, things are going to go “deeper.”

“I was just so delighted to be in The Last Jedi, and for that to be directed by Rian Johnson, who is another director I’ve long admired since I watched Brick, actually; I thought that was a really brilliant piece of work,” she said.

In fact, Johnson gave the actor the chance to work on who Captain Phasma is as a character.

“When I met him, these are huge things to me and things I never thought would happen in my career,” she revealed. “So when Rian invited me to read the script, have my thoughts and then to come and discuss it with him — as he did all of the cast members — I was really thrilled to have an opportunity of a forum where I could put my ideas forward and have some back and forth about where we felt things were and where we felt they can go.”

We still don’t know too much about Phasma (nor about most of these characters), but from the sounds of it, that might all change.

"What I can tell you about the next Star Wars film is I think Rian does an exceptional job of going deeper, of going further, and really exploring what these relationships are, Christie teased.

There are so many unanswered questions left from The Force Awakens, so we’re glad to hear that we’re going to be exploring more and more about the characters in The Last Jedi. Hopefully we’ll get to see more of Phasma without her helmet on, too.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hit’s theaters on December 15th.
