All the yes: Gwendoline Christie will return for the next “Star Wars” movie
At Saturday night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, Star Wars and Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie gave People an exclusive scoop: the Captain Phasma actress isn’t finished dominating box offices. “I will be in the next Star Wars movie,” she confirmed on the red carpet. “I think that’s an exclusive, actually.”
Gwendoline has made of habit of stealing our hearts in untraditional female roles. She plays the badass Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones, and her role as Captain Phasma was originally designed for a man. “I was very overexcited,” she explained. “I made no secret of the fact that I really campaigned for the part for a long time. And then I was delighted when J.J. Abrams wanted to have me in the film and then wanted to cast me in this role that had originally been designed for a man.”
She hopes this kind of out-of-the-box thinking will snowball into more creative casting in general. “I felt it encouraged diversity and it was doing something new and it was an interesting bit of casting for women, and I hope that in something that was such a mainstream success it would breed more of those kind of opportunities for other women.”
We hope so, too, but are also so excited that this woman is still coming back to our screens.
