Gwen Stefani’s new music video is the ultimate break-up song

Gwen Stefani has never shied away from writing songs based on her real life (“Don’t Speak” anyone?). So if you’re thinking “Used to Love You” might be about her ex-husband, Gavin Rossdale, then you are far from alone in making that assumption.

Stefani debuted the emotional break-up song in concert in New York City on Saturday night and has quickly followed it up today with a raw video. The stripped-bare video is just her, looking at the camera and having all of the feelings. No kidding, it is hard to watch when she looks directly into the lens, whether she’s nearly crying or sneering.

The clip was directed by Sophie Muller, who conceived and directed “Don’t Speak” back in the day and is the genius behind Selena Gomez’s solemnly beautiful video for “Good For You.” She was also the brains behind Beyoncé’s iconic “Ring the Alarm” video and the melancholic “Stay” video for Rihanna. She’s done a ton of iconic work with some incredible ladies that has forever changed us —and this most recent video is no different.

Stefani and Rossdale filed for divorce only two months ago. “Used to Love You” is the latest single from her expected third solo album. Sorry, no date or other info is known about that project at this time, but she dropped some tracks near the end of 2014 and never quite followed up with an album. Maybe she was waiting for this song to do so. Stay tuned!
