Guys, we have some BIG “American Crime Story” news, and we’re not sure how to feel
In a move that some people saw coming, it’s been announced that the next season of American Crime Story is NOT going to be Katrina, but will instead be The Assassination of Gianni Versace.
Despite ACS: Katrina being announced last January, it appears that showrunner Ryan Murphy is showing no signs of slowing down. The prolific TV producer announced the third season of the popular anthology series in October of last year, noting that it would follow the assassination of Gianni Versace on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion by sociopath and serial killer Andrew Cunanan.
FX soon announced, however, that Season 2 of American Crime Story wouldn’t air until 2018. This delay meant that the third season focused on the murder of Versace would air later as well.
Now it seems that there’s been a switcheroo: The next season of American Crime Story will be Versace.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Katrina has been delayed until later in 2018. As the report notes, “[t]he change in plans comes as Katrina — based on Douglas Brinkley’s book The Great Deluge — requires additional time to create special water effects needed to re-create Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.”
The move comes after pictures from the set of The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story emerged, including one of Penelope Cruz, who is set to play Donatella Versace.
We also saw shots of Darren Criss, who plays Andrew Cunanan, rocking some red speedos on set.

When announcing that Katrina had initially been delayed earlier this year, FX president John Landgraf also explained that, due to the nature of shooting in New Orleans, there are certain complications. “When you’re shooting in New Orleans, you have to worry about hurricanes,” he explained. “You can only shoot there during certain times of the year.”
The Hollywood Reporter also suggests that the schedules of Katrina’s stars, Sarah Paulson, Cuba Gooding Jr., Courtney B. Vance, Matthew Broderick, and Dennis Quaid, could also be partially responsible for the delay.
Thankfully, it appears that the release date for both seasons will still be 2018, with the order just the other way around. So while we might be getting Versace first, it doesn’t mean we have to wait to have more ACS in our lives.
Meanwhile, it was also recently revealed that a fourth (!) season of American Crime Story is in the works, this time focused on the Monica Lewinsky scandal. The news comes on the heels of the announcement that Ryan Murphy will have another (!) new show coming to FX, Pose.
Yes, this means that Murphy has four shows on the network. And we’re not complaining.
