This guy got trapped inside an ATM and wrote an SOS note so someone could help him get out
Bad days on the job happen to everyone, but this guy who got trapped inside an ATM experienced a special kind of workday hell, and we’re feeling a whole heap second-hand anxiety on his behalf.
This incident took place on Wednesday afternoon (huh, and here we thought Monday was the least sexy day of the week) when a Texas technician switched out an electronic lock in a room with the Bank of America machine and accidentally locked himself inside. After realizing he’d left his phone in his truck, he penned some SOS notes and pushed them through the ATM receipt slot in the hopes that a customer using the machine would read one and contact the police.
That was quick thinking on his part, but unfortunately, people are so accustomed to being pranked these days, a few customers ignored the notes until one wonderful person took notice and called authorities.
According to Mashable, the notes read, “Please Help. I’m stuck in here, and I don’t have my phone. Please call my boss.”
We imagine being stuck while passersby ignore pleas for help can be pretty frustrating, so this guy has our sympathies.
When the police responded to the call, they also had their suspicions about whether the report was real. Corpus Christi Senior Officer Richard Olden referred to it as a “once in a lifetime situation” that he’ll probably never see again.
“We come out here, and sure enough we can hear a little voice coming from the machine. So we are thinking this is a joke. It’s got to be a joke,” Olden said.
Once on site, police had to kick the door down to free the contractor, who was totally fine after the incident.
Now that everyone knows that ATMs don’t repair themselves, let’s all pay closer to attention to notes that may come out of a machine, especially when they’re not the kind we can spend.
