Guerrilla Girls stopped by ‘The Late Show’ to fight for underrepresented female artists
Feminist art collective Guerrilla Girls was founded in 1985 to fight discrimination in the art world. Time and time again, women and minority artists were underrepresented in the art community, with museums and prestigious galleries repeatedly choosing expensive, white-male-created art to adorn their walls. Thirty years later, and the group is still going strong, stopping by Stephen Colbert to continue to vouch for their cause.
Despite these many years spent fighting for equality, very little progress has been made. Back in 1985, most of the big New York art museums (The Guggenheim, The MET, The Whitney, etc.) had zero solo shows by female artists. Thirty years later, they’ve each had one.
There’s still so much work to be done, which is why the group’s appearance on the show is so important. As the women explain, art should be representative of a culture, and they won’t stop fighting until that balance has been found.
