“Guardians of the Galaxy” director promises there will be many toys of the female characters

When the film Guardians of the Galaxy premiered in 2014, it was met with nearly universal acclaim.  So we were super disappointed when we noticed that the merchandising for the film lacked proper female representation.

Blogger Amy Ratcliffe noticed Disney’s mysterious dearth of Gamora merchandise when she saw a men’s T-shirt featuring all of the Guardians save, you guessed it, Gamora. She noticed the same under-representation of the main female character at all other clothing outlets. (While Gamora did have a toy line, she was not represented in most clothing and accessory options.) This led to universal outrage, and the popularity of the hashtag #wheresgamora, which led people to demand of both Disney and Marvel: Where is Gamora? false false

Well, it seems our questions have been answered. When Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn was asked by a fan if the female characters of the movie would get their own action figures, Gunn responded on twitter: false

Gunn later reiterated the point on Facebook in a comment:

Of course, the lack of Gamora’s representation is symbolic of a greater dearth of powerful female figures in action figures. As Matt Wood notes for Cinema Blend:

We can only hope that with powerful directors such as James Gunn pushing for change, others in Hollywood and merchandising will take note, and fill this lack.
