#GrowingUpWithMyName perfectly describes the small-but-real pain of having certain names

Although we absolutely adore the idea of naming kids after Disney characters, reading tweets from the #GrowingUpWithMyName hashtag just might give parents a reason to reconsider giving their children monikers that could very well subject them to a lifetime of lame jokes. Sure – having a name that people constantly ridicule, misspell or mispronounce definitely isn’t the biggest struggle of most people’s lives, but it has to be tough realizing that being named after a Shakespearean character most likely means you’ll never own any of those personalized convenience store vacation souvenirs. And beyond that, for so many people, growing up with their name is a constant reminder that not only do they not fit into conventional American identities, but that so many people are totally unwilling to deal with anything that falls outside of those identities — even if it just means working a little harder to get someone’s name right. Especially for kids, having an “unusual (for America)” name can be a little thing that never stops making you feel like an outsider.
Lucky for all of us, we have Twitter to joke about our feels. God bless the internet. Sometimes, to get to get through the name struggle, you have to laugh through the pain.
