Apparently, this cut scene was even too gross for Sex and the City

Fans recognize HBO’s much-loved series Sex and the City for its candor, honesty, and openness — especially in regard to sex (it’s called Sex and the City for a reason, after all). But according to a recent Vanity Fair piece, there was one sex scene that was actually too gross for HBO to air. And, well, you’ve been warned.

The scene in question is from the Season 1 episode “The Monogamists.” Fans may remember the ep as the one where Charlotte dates the guy who, um, really likes oral sex. According to Sex and the City’s creator, Darren Star, HBO demanded that the original ending be altered.

"It was really the end of the story line," Star told Vanity Fair. "He basically was always pushing [Charlotte's] head down to give him oral sex...In the final scene, she basically let him have it about being offended by his insistence on just wanting a blow job. She accused him of only liking her for that and kind of stormed out. And then she walked back in and saw that his golden retriever was going down on him."

Um…we’re going to have to side with HBO on this one.

Sex and the City writer Amy B. Harris added, "It’s sort of horrifying that we shot that. We shot him putting peanut butter on his penis, and Charlotte walks back in like, 'Oh, I’m being unreasonable,' and then she sees that...I can’t believe we even thought about doing it."

Hindsight is always 20/20, right?

When writing a show that deals with sex, there’s bound to be a few uh-oh moments that pop up along the way. Sex and the City’s show runner, Michael Patrick King, noted the team also had to adjust a scene in Season 3’s “Attack of the Five-Foot-Ten Woman,” in which a statue of the Virgin Mary was surrounded by condoms.

"People were like, 'That’s too far!'" King said. "So we took Mary out."

It’s probably a good thing these inevitably controversial moments didn’t make it to screen. But we’d be lying if we said we didn’t love hearing all this behind-the-scenes gossip…no matter how gross it may be.
