“Grey’s Anatomy” producer answers our #1 question about a Meredith and Alex romance
Since Grey’s Anatomy first began, we’ve always felt a that there’s a special something between best friends Meredith (played by Ellen Pompeo) and Alex (Justin Chambers). At the same time, we’ve been consistently left in suspense – especially now that Alex is focused on Jo (Camilla Luddington) and Meredith has her sights set on Riggs (Martin Henderson). Yet, that hasn’t stopped us from asking this question over the course of the past 12 seasons: Will they or won’t they?
Turns out that we aren’t the only ones who want to draw hearts around Mer and Alex – even Betsy Beers (the show’s executive producer) can commiserate. “I think there’s something about them where fans sometimes feel like that might be inevitable, so they’re getting ahead of it. So I don’t think it surprises me because I think it’s a logical place to go,” Beers told E! News, adding that she never underestimated Alex. Though many initially thought he was a bad boy, she felt that he was more than that. Many only started to see her point-of-view when Alex was falling for Izzie (perfect example: the cupcake scene).
Though Betsy is aware of fans’ desire for a Mer/Alex relationship, she assured E! News that there are people rooting for other options: “From my perspective, I understand the reaction because I think you also just love these two people and you want them both to be happy, and that’s a natural thing too. But then there’s so many Alex-Jo fans—like, the Alex-Jo fans are crazyballs! So it’s nice—there’s a little bit of something for everybody right now.” While it’s great that Grey’s Anatomy can appeal to so many different people, we have to admit that waiting for answers can be frustrating for those of us who are a bit impatient (guilty).
Essentially, we’re still holding out hope for Meredith and Alex.
