Grey’s Anatomy is donating its medical supplies to real-life emergency services

These are weird (and harrowing and confusing and stressful) times we’re living in, no question about it. But in one particularly bizarre twist, Grey’s Anatomy and other shows have donated medical supplies to hospitals and fire stations to aid in coronavirus (COVID-19) relief efforts. Yes, Meredith Grey and other TV doctors are often wearing actual medical supplies. That doesn’t seem like such a big deal until, you know, a pandemic hits.

So far, the shows known to have donated supplies are ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 and Fox’s The Resident. The Good Doctor, which also airs on ABC, plans to donate supplies in the Vancouver area, as reported by CNN.

“At Station 19, we were lucky enough to have about 300 of the coveted N95 masks which we donated to our local fire station,” Krista Vernoff, an executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19, said in a statement to Good Morning America.

“They were tremendously grateful,” Vernoff continued. “At Grey’s Anatomy, we have a backstock of gowns and gloves which we are donating as well.” CNN reports that the supplies helped first responders working in the Los Angeles area.

Real doctors in Atlanta also benefitted from their TV counterparts. As reported by ABC News, The Resident donated supplies to Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Karen Law posted about the donation on Instagram, thanking the show and adding, “Yesterday, I had a serious discussion with the residents about how, though supplies are low, a magical shipment of masks is unlikely to arrive. And yet, a magical shipment of masks DID arrive, in the form of this very generous gesture.”

Of course, these donations make just a small dent when it comes to the massive lack of supplies hospitals are facing. Still, every little thing helps. This just goes to show that pitching in can come in many—sometimes very unexpected—forms.
