Greta Gerwig geeking out over meeting Justin Timberlake at the 2018 Golden Globes is all of us

Lady Bird winning the award for “Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy” was one of the highlights of last night’s Golden Globes. And for the film’s writer and director Greta Gerwig, one of the other major highlights seemed to be meeting Justin Timberlake (understandably).

Backstage, a reporter asked Gerwig about the letter she wrote to Justin Timberlake when Lady Bird was in production. In the letter, she asked for permission to use his song “Cry Me a River” in the film (he said yes). Then, with a huge smile on her face, Gerwig revealed that she got to meet Timberlake in person earlier that night.

“I did! I saw Justin Timberlake tonight, and he has seen the movie, and he gives his thumbs up,” Gerwig said gleefully. Lady Bird star Saoirse Ronan was standing beside her, and she responded with a silent “Yes!”

"Honestly, that began my night, and I felt like, man, that's amazing," she gushed. "That's all you need. Justin Timberlake's like, 'Yup.' It was amazing."

Greta Gerwig first opened up about the letter she wrote to Timberlake on Late Night with Seth Meyers back in November.

“Dear Mr. Timberlake,” she began the letter. “I mean, what can I say? You’re Justin Timberlake. You were the soundtrack to my adolescence. Your rise corresponded exactly with my very awkward puberty.” She then asked for his permission to use “Cry Me a River” in Lady Bird.

"I know I am not the first lady to completely geek out over you and your music, and I know I won't be the last," she continued. "But I can say with certainty that no one would be happier, more honored, or more psyched to have your song in my film."

Timberlake must have liked Gerwig’s letter, because he granted her permission to use “Cry Me a River.” (And the Lady Bird soundtrack wouldn’t have been complete without it.)
