Greta Gerwig wasn’t nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes, and people have feelings about this
The nominations for the 75th Annual Golden Globes are officially here and, as always, they’re riddled with surprise nominations and egregious snubs (cough, Greta Gerwig, cough). As the second biggest night in a very packed awards show season, the Globes are often considered one of the best predictors for the Academy Awards, but based on the nominations — and lack thereof — it seems like the Oscars playing field is more open than ever.
Favorites like The Shape of Water‘s Sally Hawkins (Best Actress in a Drama), Lady Bird’s Saoirse Ronan (Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy), and Call Me By Your Name‘s Timothée Chalamet each secured Globes nominations, and were joined by surprise nominees in Baby Driver’s Ansel Elgort (Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy) and All the Money in the World‘s Christopher Plummer (Best Supporting Actor in a Drama), who quickly stepped into the role in November after Kevin Spacey was cut from the project due to sexual misconduct allegations.
But while many of our favorites films were rewarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the governing body of the Golden Globes, the snubs definitely outweighed the surprises.
Perhaps the most glaring snub was Greta Gerwig — whose directorial debut, Lady Bird, has been dubbed one of the best films of the year, and even broken the record for best-reviewed film on Rotten Tomatoes. She was completely shut out of the Best Director category. While Gerwig still picked up a nod for her Lady Bird screenplay, her omission from the directing category was one of the biggest snubs.
The Best Director category itself has come under fire for completely shutting out many of the year’s most lauded directors. In addition to Gerwig, Jordan Peele was snubbed for his record-breaking film Get Out, and many were surprised to see Dee Rees (Mudbound), Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), and Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name) completely left out of the race.
Naturally, people took to Twitter to share their disbelief over the Best Director snubs:
Not a single woman nominated for best director in a year when Greta Gerwig’s @LadyBirdMovie is 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes and is, hands down, one of the best directed films of the year. Not a good look, @goldenglobes . https://t.co/aOTXa8fRsR

The biggest disappointment of the morning: No Greta Gerwig. No Dees Rees. No Patty Jenkins. The #GoldenGlobes nominated five men for best director.

LOL at HFPA for snubbing Jordan Peele & Greta Gerwig. Hopefully, #Oscars will correct this.

No Greta Gerwig and Jordan Peele for Best Director at the Golden Globes? No thank you, you learned nothing. Goodbye.

wow you really did Jordan Peele, Greta Gerwig, and Luca Guadagnino like this??? wonder why 🧐 https://t.co/9IZvYoTfcT

Where is @PattyJenks? Where is Dee Rees? Where is Greta Gerwig? This is a year when women directors are making it to the finish line in awards season, and STILL they can't break through. https://t.co/LvcJWagHEK

The #GoldenGlobes could have nominated Greta Gerwig, Dee Rees, Jordan Peele or even Patty Jenkins for Best Director. But no, we got five white men. Very disappointed.

Not one woman nominated for Best Director in a year that saw Wonder Woman, Detroit, Mudbound, and more. To top it off, Ladybird was nominated for Best Picture, but Greta Gerwig excluded from the boys club #GoldenGlobes

Got to sleep-in today, so just saw the Globe noms: That the The Big Sick, Jordan Peele, Greta Gerwig, and Michael Stulhbarg weren't nominated in their respective categories is disappointing.
That The Good Place was totally shut out is a TOTAL DISGRACE.

So no nomination for Greta Gerwig, Dee Rees, and/or Patty Jenkins? NONE of these women deserve a nomination? Really? WTF. L #GoldenGlobes #GoldenGlobes2018

Funny how Greta Gerwig and Jordan Peele, having directed two of the HIGHEST RANKED AND MOST LOVED films of the year, were both fucking snubbed. It’s almost as if it was because of sexism and racism….oh wait.

Not to mention they also had Jordan Peele (Get Out) and Dee Rees (Mudbound) as legit options as well. Le sigh.

But frankly, if there’s one thing we’ve learned from awards seasons over the years, it’s that nothing is ever on lock. So hopefully when the Oscar nominations are announced on January 23rd, we’ll see Gerwig and Peele amongst the Best Director nominees.
The Golden Globes will be hosted by Seth Meyers on January 7th.
