Greta Gerwig Cast as Lead in ‘HIMYM’ Spinoff, ‘How I Met Your Dad’

Good news, HIMYM fans! The show will live on….sort of.

CBS has announced that they’ll shoot a pilot for How I Met Your Dad – a spinoff of HIMYM with all new characters told from the mother’s POV. Greta Gerwig has been cast as Sally, the main character, who is a “female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she’s going in life.” Sally is thinking of calling it quits with her husband of a year, Gavin, and she’ll lean on her circle of friends for advice and support through the inevitable divorce. Gerwig is also going to be credited as producer on the show.

The supporting roles have not yet been announced but the characters will include her brother, her brother’s husband, her best friend who runs a fashion blog, and that blog’s IT guy who has a crush on Sally.

Real talk – I’ve only seen one or two episodes of HIMYM. But it’s one of those shows that every single person I know has told me I NEED TO WATCH. I am however, a major Greta Gerwig fan and if the show is picked up for a full season, she’ll be a writer for the series as well. If you’ve never seen Lola Versus, please stop whatever you’re doing and go watch it now. She also wrote and starred in Frances Ha, about a woman who apprentices for a dance company (though she’s not really a dancer), and throws herself into her dreams, even as their possibility dwindles.

If anyone can take a spinoff (that isn’t really a spinoff – isn’t there a crossover character requirement?) and turn it into a hit series and future Netflix marathon, it’s Greta. Plus, How I Met Your Dad will have HIMYM’s Creators Carter Bays, Craig Thomas, and Executive Producer Emily Spivey on board as well.

I think we’re in good hands.

What do you think? Will you watch this show?
